Tobin's watchmaker's bench is almost done. Soon I'll get my garage back:
As you can see, it is made with hollow panels to save weight and cost. Despite the lack of wood it's one of the most solid feeling desks I've stood on. It was budgeted at $400 and ended up costing about $200. So despite the high tech construction, it's turned out about on par with commercial furniture. And did I mention it's very light? Unlike my chipboard flatpack desk, I can pick this up with ease.
It is made of 3mm ply sandwich around pine strips along the edges and inside any large unsupported void. There are also strips wherever a joint needs to be made.
